Mattias Wager fæddist í Stokkhólmi árið 1967. Hann lærði á orgel og stundaði nám í kirkjutónlist við Royal College of Music hjá kennurunum Torvald Torén og Anders Bondeman. Þaðan fór hann til Þýskalands og lærði hjá organistanum Johannes Geffert í Bonn og síðar hjá Naji Hakim í París, Frakklandi.
Hann hefur unnið til fjölda verðlauna á alþjóðlegum vettvangi og meðal annars til þrennra fyrstu verðlauna: Árið 1995 í Organ Interpretation Competition í St Albans, Englandi, árið 1991 í The Improvisation Competitions í Strängnäs, Svíþjóð og árið 1995 í París (Grand Prix d'improvisation „Pierre Cochereau").
Auk þess að starfa sem dómorganisti í Stokkhólmi hefur Mattias Wager komið fram á tónleikum, masterclass námskeiðum, orgelhátíðum víða um Evrópu og í Brasilíu. Hann hefur kennt orgelleik og spuna við fjóra helstu tónlistarháskóla Svíþjóðar.
Hann hefur sérstakan áhuga á samstarfi við aðra listamenn, meðal annars slagverksleikarann Anders Åstrand og söngvarann og kórstjórann Gary Graden en saman hafa þeir stofnað tríó með aðaláherslu á spuna. Mattias hefur einnig samið tónlist fyrir nokkur leikrit sem hafa notið velgengni. Mattias Wager hefur frá árinu 2017 kennt við The Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
Frá árinu 1995 hefur Mattias Wager margoft komið til íslands til tónleikahalds, upptöku geisladiska og orgelkennslu. Honum til mikillar ánægju er hann gestatónlistarstjóri Alþjóðlegs Orgelsumars 2019 ásamt Herði Áskelssyni.
Mattias Wager was born in Stockholm in 1967. He studied Organ and Church Music at the Royal College of Music under Torvald Torén and Anders Bondeman. Later, he also studied with Johannes Geffert in Bonn and in Paris with Naji Hakim.
Among his achievements in international competitions are included three first prizes: in the 1995 Organ Interpretation Competition in St Albans, England, and in the improvisation competitions in 1991 in Strängnäs, Sweden and 1995 in Paris (Grand Prix d'improvisation "Pierre Cochereau").
Beside his work as Cathedral organist in Stockholm, Mattias Wager gives concert performances and masterclasses at festivals and other prestigious venues throughout Europe and has also given several concerts in Brazil. He has been teaching organ and improvisation at the four major Music Colleges in Sweden. Mattias Wager takes a particular interest in cooperating with other artists, for example percussionist Anders Åstrand and singer/choirmaster Gary Graden, together with whom he has formed a trio focusing on improvisation. He has also composed music for several successful theatre plays.
Since 1995, Mattias Wager has been a regular guest in the Icelandic organ world, performing, recording and teaching. Mattias Wager is proud to be Visiting Artistic Director of the Organ Summer 2019 in Hallgrímskirkja, together with resident Master of Music Hörður Áskelsson.
Since 2017, Mattias Wager is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
